Speech is a form of communication just as music, painting, and sculpture are. Although we can label a piece of music as 18th Century because of its form, it is also timeless. And if you showed a Van Gogh to a woman who had never heard of him, she still would understand the emotion and message within the painting.
Literature is not timeless in this way because it uses speech, which is as fluid as a Bach fugue and constantly changing. It is only the great stories, such as Homer’s, such as Shakespeare’s, that survive beyond their generation. They do so because they give us universal truths, which never change.
It is my goal to write well enough to convey these universal truths.
